6 Jun Ji-hyun looks that made the Korean film star a fashion icon and Korea’s favourite sweetheart

Korean movie star Jun Ji-hyun, known as Gianna Jun, is adored and admired. Fans love her fashion sense so much they have bought out clothing and make-up she has worn on-screen. Photo: giannajunfp/Instagram

Ever since Jun Ji-hyun (also known as Gianna Jun) appeared on-screen in 1999’s White Valentine, her natural beauty and carefully-chosen roles have won over Korea and the world. Since her debut, she has hardly changed at all, maintaining her fresh-faced image throughout her career.

We take a look at the way this multi-award winning Hallyu star has evolved throughout the years, while retaining her signature look.

My Sassy Girl (2001)

Jun starred in the Korean movie My Sassy Girl, one of the highest-grossing Korean comedies of all time.

This was the role that catapulted her to international fame and cemented her trademark “innocent” look of minimal make-up, straight black hair and light lipstick.

Playing a quirky and mysterious college student (referred to only as “The Girl”) in this critically-acclaimed, award-winning romantic comedy, Jun personified the “no make-up make-up” look with only the faintest tinge of pink lipstick and straight black eyebrows.

A Man Who Was Superman (2008)

Famous for her innocent image, Jun surprised everyone with her role as Song Soo-jung, a cynical, chain-smoking, documentary filmmaker in this bittersweet film. Unlike the looks she sported in previous romantic or melodramatic films, Jun wore jeans and cargo pants throughout, coupled with her messy fringe and nude lipstick, to match her character as an overworked producer.

The Thieves (2012)

This star-studded action-comedy heist was like Korea’s mixed-gender answer to Ocean’s 11. Jun’s femme fatale cat burglar (named Yenicall) traipses across Asia donning a mixture of glamorous looks, from chic oversized hats and tweed, to skin-tight leopard-print dresses. With her dark brown hair, more eyeliner and brighter lip colours than in previous roles, it’s no wonder the bumbling Zampano (played by Kim Soo-hyun) fell for her.

My Love From Another Star (2013)

In My Love From Another Star, Jun played an obnoxious actress.

Another major milestone in her career, Jun’s portrayal as hilariously obnoxious actress Cheon Song-yi saw her triumphant return to the small screen.

With an on-screen wardrobe to die for, filled with high-fashion pieces from Chloe, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana and more, fans went crazy, emptying stores worldwide of Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture lipstick in shade No. 52, Rosy Coral, as well as several shades of red and pink from Korean brand IOPE. Rocking more affordable fashion, the She’s Miss khaki trench coat also sold out thanks to Jun.

Jun also permed, layered and dyed her hair cappuccino brown for the role, which reunited her with The Thieves co-star Kim Soo-hyun.

The Berlin File (2013)

Once again breaking away from her innocent image, this espionage thriller saw Jun take on a meatier and more exciting role, and her wardrobe changed with it. Acting as a North Korean translator, Jun’s clothing was mostly shades of black, brown, beige and white. With her black hair tied up in a ponytail, it gave the actress a more mature look, compared to her more carefree roles such as the ones she performed as Cheon Song-yi and The Girl.

Legend of the Blue Sea (2017)

Returning to television as a literal fish out of water – in this case, a mermaid – Jun’s wardrobe had stand-out pieces once again, though what really stood out were her bold pink lips and slightly heavier eye make-up. While Jun has long lost the cute baby fat from her My Sassy Girl days, she has not lost her youthful looks and playful demeanour.
