Mother Seton sophomore competing in International Youth Awareness Congress contest

Jessenia Maldonado, a sophomore at Mother Seton Regional High School in Clark, is the first-place winner in New Jersey of the Moose International Youth Awareness contest, and will represent New Jersey at the International Youth Awareness Congress in Boston, Massachusetts, next month.

In addition, as a state winner, the Perth Amboy resident will receive a $1,000 scholarship payable to her college of choice.

The Moose International Youth Awareness Congress is the culmination of the annual Youth Awareness program of the Loyal Order of Moose. At the state and international levels, the participants discuss how to use their influence to encourage students aged four to nine years old to make healthy and wise choices in their lives.

Maldonado was required to give a minimum of three presentations entitled “Moose KidTalks” to groups of youngsters in this age range within their local communities.

“I chose to do this project because nowadays many children struggle to embrace who they are,” she said. “My goals were to teach the children to be proud of themselves and all of their accomplishments big or small, to be their own individual person, to be a leader and not a follower and to promote self-confidence."

At the international competition next month Jessenia will compete for a $12,000 college scholarship.

“Although I taught the groups that we are all different in many ways and we must celebrate our differences, they understood the point that we are all equal in our self-worth,” she said.

Caroline Purdy of Cranbury was named to the spring dean's list at Oklahoma City University in Oklahoma City, Okahoma. Students must achieve a grade-point average of 3.5.

Perth Amboy Public Schools

During the annual Senior Awards Night Ceremony for Perth Amboy High School, 111 graduating seniors were awarded The New Jersey Department of Education State Seal of Biliteracy.

The seal identifies graduating high school students who are able to demonstrate proficiency in English in addition to one or more world languages. By achieving the Seal of Biliteracy, students demonstrate that they are able to speak, read, listen and write in two or more languages at a high level of proficiency, according to a news release.

Under the leadership of Dr. David A. Roman, Superintendent of Schools, the number of Perth Amboy High School students graduating with the Seal of Biliteracy honor has increased each consecutive year since its implementation in 2015.

Perth Amboy Public School District also was one of seven districts to pilot the initiative.

This past May, the New Jersey Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages/New Jersey Bilingual Educators (NJTESOL/NJBE) Advocacy Summit recognized Roman as the 2018 Recipient of the Superintendent of the Year for the Seal of Biliteracy. In addition, Elizabeth Franks, NJTESOL/NJBE Advocacy representative, acknowledged Perth Amboy Public School District as being in the forefront of the Dual Language education initiative.

“Dr. Roman’s commitment to dual language learners signifies the expansion of opportunities for all Perth Amboy Public School students to pursue higher education and professions as the need for bilingual and multilingual skills increases globally,” said Dr. Vivian Rodriguez, Assistant Superintendent for Learning/Educational Services.

Perth Amboy Public School District has the only public, freestanding dual language school in New Jersey.

Quinnipiac University

Emily Kulesza of Metuchen received a master's degree in occupational therapy on May 12 from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut.

Rosemont College

Lena Buccigrossi of East Brunswick received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Rosemont College in Philadelphia. Buccigrossi was recognized with the following honors and awards: dean’s list, Kistler Honor Society, the Rosemont College Scholar-Athlete award, the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) All-Sportsmanship team for volleyball, and the CSAC All-Academic teams for softball and volleyball. Buccigrossi conducted her field work in psychology at the Montgomery County Women’s Center.

Union County College

Beginning in the fall 2018 semester, students will have an opportunity to major in Cyber Forensics, a new Associate in Applied Science degree program at Union County College. The field of cyber forensics encompasses the discovery, preservation, analysis, and reporting of digital evidence in a way that is admissible in a court of law.

The employment outlook for this field is extremely favorable due to the rampant growth in data breaches, privacy violations, and cybercrimes. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), cyber-related occupations are projected to grow by 28 percent between 2016 and 2026, four times faster than the average for all occupations.

Union’s associate degree program was designed to prepare students to enter the workforce or continue their studies at baccalaureate-granting colleges and universities, according to a news release. Students entering the workforce upon graduation will be qualified for in-demand jobs, such as middle-skill digital forensics technicians, cyber forensics examiners, and cybersecurity incident handlers.

Experiential education is integrated throughout the curriculum, culminating in a service-learning capstone course with community partners; students apply what they have learned in a real world situations with non-profit organizations. Through hands-on learning, students will gain experience with digital forensics software and hardware tools in a dedicated classroom that was funded by a National Science Foundation grant. In addition to gaining technical skills, students will broaden their studies with classes in cybersecurity principles, cyber law and ethics, criminal justice, government, sociology, and statistics.
