The Los Alamos National Laboratory is preparing to create another facility to prepare for its expanding staff amid housing concerns.
The laboratory presented a plan at the Los Alamos County Council meeting to discuss a new location on July 18.
LANL has around 17,244 employees and hopes to hire 2,000 more employees. The new location could benefit Los Alamos County; as the laboratory stated, it could lead to reductions in housing needs and traffic.
The off-site campus would work to house less-hazardous spaces. This would allow for the main location in Los Alamos to have specialized projects. The possible location would also have research and development offices, warehousing, and other offices.
At the county council meeting, LANL provided statistics on its student employment base. The laboratory employed over 1,800 during the summer of 2022 at its peak. Over a third of its employees started their employment as students, according to its 2022 statistics.
The laboratory is partnered with several New Mexico universities, including Northern New Mexico College, Santa Fe Community College, and the University of New Mexico. LANL is functioned by the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration.
