The Witch Doctor can summon pets and raise the dead in some situations. The Witch Doctor is becoming a range-focused character that can control the battlefield from afar. Rather than shields, a common off-hand item for Witch Doctor's is a "Mojo," a focus that can augment a character's stats and attacks.
Starting a fresh Witch Doctor can actually be one of the more difficult classes, as sheer damage doesn't come into play until certain Skills are unlocked. A trio of Zombie Dogs will play a pivotal role in leveling a Witch Doctor through their early levels.
