Guam girls do well in PI surf competition

Local surfers Angel'Lea Aguilar and Minami Cramer competed in the 4th Philippine Wahine Classic on Nov. 19 and 20 in Baler, Aurora, the birthplace of Philippine surfing culture.

The competition was attended by top longboard and shortboard surfers from all over the country as well as a group of novice surfers from the region, a release from the Guam Hui Nalu surf club states.

On the day of the event, surf conditions started from stormy and windy weather, but concluded with glassy and contestable waves, the release states.

As a result, the Guam girls battled changing conditions in all their heats but came out successful.

Throughout the competition Guam coach Joe Villatora guided the young surfers. In the end, the results of the competition gave way to the girls competing in the final heats.

Cramer made it to the mahalini longboard finals and took first place in that category.

Aguilar made it to two finals, the open shortboard and open longboard categories, slugging it out with Philippines' top female surfers.

In the end Aguilar took second place overall in both shortboard and longboard, the release states.

Young surfers from Guam compete in Hawaii

During awards night, contest organizers Carla and Ian Zamora recognized and promoted the accomplishment of the girls and their positive attitudes towards other surfers. In addition the promoters mentioned Guam numerous times during the event to promote and recognize where the girls came from. The crowd responded with cheers and applause each time Guam was mentioned, the release states.
