Great reworking of the 1979 series, although that original still holds a special place for some of us. The new version is more gritty, raw and highly emotional. The Cylons are more devious, with some having a fully human appearance. One of them, known as Number Six , or often Six, has a relationship with Dr. Gaius Baltar, who co-designs the new defense computer network, she admits to reworking several algorithms. She soon reveals that she is a Cylon. Hints are soon dropped that something horrible is about to happen, and Baltar is beside himself. Brand new Cylon baseships and new fighters appear en masse, letting loose a virus/shutdown code that renders Colonial fighters, battlestars, and support ships useless. Entire squadrons of the new Vipers and battlestars are quickly overrun and destroyed, having no ability to defend themselves. That allows an unstoppable missile barrage on the Colonial worlds in a horrifying nuclear attack. The Galactica survives due to an older computer system, as well as Commander Adama's refusal to rely on computer systems to begin with. The race is soon on to reach a outpost where the Galactica can refuel and rearm itself and ready itself for what will be a long ,grueling struggle to reach a new world to call home. It is during this mission that Adama discovers the Cylons now look human, and Dr. Baltar is assigned the task of designing a system to detect them, at this point unaware of his part in the destruction of the colonies and the fleet. The race is on, in the meantime, to rescue survivors, having to make the gutwrenching decision to leave behind ships that are not hyperdrive (FTL) capable. In the closing scene, the different Cylon models gather to announce their plan to hunt down and finish off the survivors, and the Galactica that protects them; at least one of them is a well known crew member....Read full review
This DVD consists of the pilot miniseries that appeared just prior to the regular series. The Editors have done a masterful job of splicing a number of miniseries episodes together into a seamless movie. The "choppy" effect that normally accompanies combining seperate episodes and comercial breaks has been eliminated. The Miniseries/Pilot movie sets the background for the series. The storey begins just prior to the massive Cylon attack that destroys 12 home worlds and the battelefleet. Then the formation of the civilian refugee fleet and civilian government is covered. The mniseries concludes with the fleet and charactors formed and running from the Cylons. Everything is set for the regular series to start and make sense to the viewer. This DVD "makes sense" of the series for the unintiated. Personally I think this represents one of the best performances given by the cast. This DVD can be summed up as an epic pilot movie to the series that will keep you on the edge of your seat.Read full review
In my opinion, this is one of the best shows on television today. The characters are likeable and hateable. The action is good, and the special effects are also. I bought this miniseries because I had not actually seen it before the series came out on Sci-Fi channel. I watched it after the complete first season was over. I wanted to buy the first and second seasons so I decided I needed to go ahead and buy the miniseries and get the full story. If you haven't seen the miniseries, you need to. I recommend this movie to anyone who has an interest in buying the Battlestar Galactica Series DVD's. You might as well have the complete set - right! My only complaint about the series, which is really trivial in itself, is the "frackin" words they use. I just find it really hilarious, but I guess it fits now that I'm used to hearing it.Read full review
If there was one thing that I really loved about that cheesy original incarnation of Battlestar Galactica, it was the Cylons. They have always been one of my favorite bad guys. From the chrome suits, to their ships, to that moving red eye, to their voices, the Cylons were just so darn cool. Somewhere back home in my parents' attic is an original Cylon fighter, with a mini-Cylon in the cockpit and two red "torpedoes" that you can shoot by depressing a button on the wing. I even remember that those "torpedoes" were recalled because they were a choking hazard, but I wouldn't send them back. No. That would have taken away part of the fun of my Cylon spaceship. Boy those guys were and are just so darn…cool. Maybe they weren't the best ground fighters, but just listening to them saying "by your command" was enough to send a shiver down my spine. But here we are, twenty plus years later with a re-imagining of that 1970s sci-fi show. The one thing above all else I wanted to see in this series was a chrome-plated Cylon, lumbering around, and eventually saying my three favorite words: "by your command." Did I get that? Nope. Is that why, upon first viewing the miniseries when it aired on the Sci-Fi Channel in 2003, I didn't like it? Was I holding a grudge for denying me my classic Cylons and their slick voices? Maybe. I can tell you I wasn't impressed with the miniseries right off the bat, and I wasn't initially impressed by the weekly series either. But after watching this disc, I realized I was holding on to the past a bit too tightly and this show is quite good with fantastic potential.Read full review
This is an excellent re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica. Several character twists from the original series make for an entertaining saga that leaves you guessing throughout the show. The characters are engaging and each plays their role perfectly. Love them or hate them, they are good at what they do and leave you wanting more. The show is similar, but manages to stray away from the original 1978 show in what I consider to be a great story line that flows perfectly without any hiccups, and brings intriguing character arcs and development to the table. I would recommend this series to any one that is a fan of science fiction, and would even suggest following up with the full series and movies
