Bewitched - the classic TV series starring Elizabeth Montgomery as a witch - will be adapted into a children's animated series

An animated reboot of the classic sitcom Bewitched is in the works at Sony Pictures Television.

The news about the project was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, and it was also announced that the new version of the program would be aimed at children.

The show, which is also being adapted into a film, was also described by Sony Pictures Television-Kids' Executive Vice President and general manager Joe D'Ambrosia as 'Hannah Montana meets Harry Potter.'

According to the media outlet, the new version of Bewitched would be centered on 13-year-old Tabitha Stevens, whose parents, Samantha and Darrin Stephens, were the focus of the original program.

The series would follow the character as she juggles her life as a middle schooler with her time spent learning magic at a secret institution run by her grandmother, Endora.

An animated series based on The Partridge Family, as well as youth-oriented versions of Wheel Of Fortune and Shark Tank, are also currently being developed.

D'Ambrosia went on to speak about the potential of reviving older series as children-oriented programs during his interview with the media outlet.

'There's such a vast history at Sony Pictures Television with properties that we could play around with and reinvent, introducing a whole new generation of kids to them,' he said.

Bewitched initially premiered on ABC in September of 1964 and ran for a total of eight seasons, the last of which aired in 1972.

The show was centered on a witch who married into a non-magical family and attempted to learn how to become a housewife.

The program starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stephens, and Agnes Moorehead portrayed her mother, Einora.

Dick York portrayed Darrin Stephens for the show's first five seasons, although he left the program to focus on his health and was replaced by Dick Sargent.

Bewitched was met with positive reviews throughout its run, although it was eventually canceled in 1973 due to low ratings.
