ignition coil driver with arduino

Hi I'm trying to drive my ignition coil with arduino. I'm using the following setup as seen in the picture.

I'm using the following components:

-ne555 as a timer
-mosfet IRF640

Is the ne555 timer oke or do I need to use another component? (4n35?)

To an unaided eye it's just a spludge of components...

please post a circuit diagam - then we might be able to help.

regards

Allan.

It appears you're trying to use the 555 as a mosfet driver, but no it does not appear to be connected correctly. I base this statement primarily on the fact that you appear to have the mosfet gate connected to pin 6 (on the 555) when it should be connected to pin 3.

Hi,
Welcome to the forum.

Have you done any research on how to switch highly inductive circuits in particular auto ignition circuits.

Can you tell us your electronics, programming, arduino, hardware experience?

Can you please post a copy of your circuit, in CAD or a picture of a hand drawn circuit in jpg, png?

I cannot see any back EMF protection for the MOSFET, what criteria did you use for the MOSFET choice?
Although you are switching 12V, the primary of the coil will produce 500V or more when firing the sparkplug.

Thanks.. Tom..

To: allanHurst,Chagrin and TomGeorge,
I do must me apologise for my first post that day. I don't have any experience with Arduino and carcoil ignition drivers. I found a schematic on the internet and start to try construct anything. Now I can't find that schematic anymore as I destroyed the original...
Surfing on the internet I just learned that in the case of this schematic that I used, it was totally wrong!
It has a Photocoupler as a "timer" or so, and I thouged it was a 555. That does not combine!
For now, I am trying constuct an other driver and using some other schematics wich I found on the internet ( Google and Youtube p.e.)
I do my best to learn more about electronics, because I have the intention to construct a "Hubbard Coil"
A learned that a device like that needs an alternating high power to operate, so the first thing to make is a driver for the car ignition coil who drives the Hubbard Coil with high voltage and alternating current.
Thank you guys anyway for trying to help me.
Maybe needs more help in the next future !!!

The way to proceed is find the datasheet for an IGBT designed for automotive ignition coil driving,
then use the example circuit from that datasheet. Use an IGBT, not MOSFET, for high voltage, much
less likely to expode it. IGBTs for ignition are capable of 10V gate drive, most IGBTs need 15V.

Or make life easy and use a specialized module like this:

Hi,
Have you researched the Hubbard enough to find out what voltage/power and frequency you need to excite the coils.

An ignition coil circuit will not provide the AC you need, it will provide when loaded into a coil or a spark gap a pulse or square-wave.

I think you need a SINEWAVE AC to excite the Hubbard Coils.

Good Luck.. Tom..

I looked at the Hubbard coil. Just another energy-for-nothing daft idea. 10 watts in, 20kW out?!

don't think so, sunshine.

Allan

Oh god, more overunity woo. According to wikipedia another of Hubbard's great ideas was:

According to Todd Brendan Fahey, Hubbard introduced more than 6,000 people to LSD, including scientists, politicians, intelligence officials, diplomats, and church figures.[5]

My Dad , who fought in WWII , told me of an old army saying...

bullshit baffles brains

the more complex and unanalysable the gadget, the more time that clever people will spend trying to figure it out.. to no effect

many ingenious overunity devices rely on this to obtain funds etc.

edit - misquote...
remember an old Yorkshire saying "you CAN'T get owt for nowt"

and generally much less.
