oneworld awards scholarships for IATA sustainability training to Japan Airlines and S7 Airlines

04 Oktober 2021

The oneworld® Alliance has awarded scholarships to member airlines Japan Airlines and S7 Airlines for a new environmental sustainability training programme offered by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) with the University of Geneva (UNIGE).

The scholarships will enable additional sustainability training and development opportunities and support Japan Airlines and S7 Airlines’ efforts in registering for the IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA), an evaluation system that independently assesses and improves the environmental management of an airline.

The scholarship winners are:

· Ms Michiko Otsu, Manager for Environment, Social and Governance Promotion, Japan Airlines

· Ms Ekaterina Popova, Head, Enterprise Compliance & Risk Management, S7 Airlines

Otsu and Popova will participate in the IATA – University of Geneva Certificate of Advanced Studies in Environmental Sustainability in Aviation, a new programme offered by IATA and UNIGE to equip aviation industry employees with the necessary fundamental technical and operational skills to further advance sustainability at their organisations.

The scholarships are among several ongoing efforts at oneworld and its member airlines, in an active commitment to advance environmental sustainability. In September 2020, oneworld became the first global airline alliance to commit to net zero emissions by 2050. The alliance released its initial carbon roadmap in August and is a supporter of the World Economic Forum Clean Skies for Tomorrow Coalition’s 10% sustainable aviation fuel by 2030 ambition statement. Earlier today, oneworld committed to a collective target of using sustainable aviation fuel for 10% of combined fuel volumes by 2030.

oneworld’s environmental sustainability efforts are overseen by the alliance’s Environment and Sustainability Board, chaired by IAG Head of Sustainability Jonathon Counsell and with representation from all member airlines.

oneworld Governing Board Chairman and Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive H.E. Mr Akbar Al Baker said: ““We are delighted to announce these scholarships for oneworld member airlines to support them in their sustainability efforts. Training and development will play a crucial role in empowering airline employees to be champions of sustainability and we encourage others in the industry to enable education opportunities for their employees. I want to thank both IATA and the University of Geneva for this excellent initiative which will strengthen the pathway towards a more sustainable future for our industry.”

IATA Director General Willie Walsh said: “Training is essential to ensure that aviation maintains a highly skilled workforce. With the industry’s stronger focus on sustainability, opportunities to acquire these new skillsets must be made available. We are therefore honoured that oneworld has chosen to support the new IATA sustainability training with sponsorships."

oneworld CEO Rob Gurney said: “Sustainability has been a top priority for oneworld carriers and these scholarships for our member airlines are a further signal of our commitment. We want to thank member airlines and IATA for their support in this initiative and we stand ready to collaborate further with industry stakeholders to promote and advance sustainability.”
