NotebookReviews reviewed Sony VAIO VGN-TX770 notebook computer and concluded that “I really enjoyed using the Sony TX 770. We are starting to see more and more options in the ultra portable category, and this model is right up there. The wireless capabilities make this a perfect travel companion for those that are constantly on the move and need to have frequent internet access. Sony adds a bit of fun by allowing for instant on music and DVD use. Unfortunately, the laptop is expensive. I hope future models will incorporate a fanless design because the fan noise is constant and can be annoying. A faster hard drive would be nice as well. Overall, the Sony TX770 is a solid business-class ultra portable notebook.”

Sony VAIO VGN-FE590

Sony VAIO VGN-FE590 notebook computer, the first custom configurable unit in Sony’s FE series. The FE590 features dual core processor and 15.4″ LCD.

The FE590 the way I configured it, is everything I need in a notebook and maybe a little more. It satisfies my computing needs, while at the same time offering the possibility of light gaming. It is really quiet and has a beautiful screen. It doesn’t get scorching hot and on top of that will turn heads wherever you take it. Being the son of an industrial designer, the form factor always factors into my decisions when buying consumer products. With this notebook I notice myself closing it more often than really necessary, just so that I can look at it and open it when I come back.

This is certainly not supposed to be a very portable thin and light notebook, but I think the biggest problem of the FE is its short battery life and lack of portability because of it and the large power brick. So if you are in the market for a 15.4″ notebook, portability is not the most important aspect you are looking for, and you don’t need the most powerful graphics card out there, then I can recommend the Sony VAIO FE590 as a nice and versatile notebook that will make your girlfriend (or boyfriend/wife/husband/etc.) jealous.

Sony VAIO FJ270/B notebook computer’s specifications feature Intel Pentium M Processor 750 with Centrino Technology, 14.1″ WXGA widescreen LCD with Sony XBRITE-ECO technology, integrated 802.11 b/g wireless LAN, integrated DVD+R Double Layer/DVD-RW drive, integrated camera and microphone (Motion Eye). The laptop is slim and compact and weighs just 5.3 pounds.

NotebookReview used the Sony VAIO FJ laptop and even tested-drive with Wista Vista, and concluded that if you’re in the market for a single core Centrino that is good for home and business use, then get this laptop. Please don’t get this laptop if you plan on running games like Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, but you should get this laptop if you plan on running Solitaire at 90FPS (with HDR and AA). It is future proof, being able to run Windows Vista quite solidly, so that is another incentive. If you get this laptop, cherish it and welcome to the world-renown “Vaio-Users Club”; your official membership card should arrive in the mail in 4-6 weeks!

Pros:

Good performance
Nice design
Vista Ready
Lightweight

Cons:

No included Recovery Disk
A lot of trial software included
So-so battery life (if you don’t feel like shelling out $300)
Screen smudges easily

Sony VAIO VGN-X505VP

Sony VAIO VGN-X505VP is an ultra-portable, light weight and super slim laptop which is just 21mm at its thickest and 11mm at its thinnest end, and weighs just about 822g. Sony VAIO VGN-X505VP uses ten-layer motherboard and special graphite heat diffuser which eliminates the need for cooling fans to achieve its thinness and silent. The notebook computer is powered by Intel Pentium M Processor with Intel Centrino Technology and has docking port for optional docking station. Along with the laptop, bundled accessories include external DVD+/- RW, WLAN 802.11b/g card, multi card adapter & slip cover for both the notebook and the accessories.

TrustedReviews reviewed Sony VAIO VGN-X505VP and gave the ultra-portable laptop the overall rating of 8 out of 10, and concluded that words like beautiful, stunning and stylish do nothing to describe the X505VP, and even the pictures accompanying this review don’t do it justice. It’s not the fastest machine out there and the price isn’t insignificant, but what you’re getting is the pinnacle of mobile computing. One day all notebooks will look like this, and for me, that day can’t come soon enough.

Digital Trends gave the Sony X505VP the score of 9 out of 10 and concluded that the Sony X505 pushes the envelope when it comes to sub-notebook design and innovation. Almost everything is unique in one way or another and Sony tops it off by adding the elegance and detail that we have only seen from companies such as Apple. The included optical mouse adds a nice touch by offering a memory stick reader, and the packaging that the X505 comes in is very stylish and retro.

Using the X505 in a public place such as a coffeehouse or on public transportation, you’ll notice a lot of glances. Whether they are looking at the elegant little powerhouse in front of you or the big grin on your face while using it, you will be noticed – it’s just that special. The Sony X505 is an extreme system that will appeal to those wanting the bleeding edge in design and innovation.

PC Pro also reviewed Sony X505VP and concluded that “the X505 is an incredible engineering achievement from Sony, but the exorbitant price and poor single year of return-to-base warranty hold it back. We can’t recommend it for serious, heavyweight work, but if your priorities are designer looks and minimal weight then this is the notebook to choose.”

Sony VAIO VGN-AR190G

Sony VAIO VGN-AR190G Blu-Ray enabled digital studio notebook PC is a powerful, portable multimedia and entertainment media center PC plus the first laptop computer to include high-definition Blu-Ray DVD playback capability, which is backwards-compatible with standard DVDs and CDs and is also a multi-format disc burner to write DVD+/-R/RW discs as well as dual-layer discs. Sony VAIO VGN-AR190G features Intel Core Duo T2500 processor, 17-inch WXGA+ (1440 x 900 pixels–ready for 1080i HDTV) widescreen LCD with XBRITE technology, NVidia GeForce Go 7600GT graphics card with 256 MB of video RAM, 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi, memory card reader, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, ExpressCard/54 card slot and NTSC TV tuner and runs Windows XP Media Center 2005, Update Rollup 2.

PC Magazine reviews Sony VAIO VGN-AR190G digital studio laptop and concludes good editors’ rating of 3.5 out of 5 that the VAIO VGN-AR190G is Sony’s best portable Media Center offering so far, but it’ll put a large dent in your wallet. Because of its HD recording capabilities and other promising A/V features, this attractive laptop is a bit more compelling than the Qosmio G35-AV650. That said, my suggestion is to delay taking the plunge until Sony hammers out several software issues and more Blu-ray titles hit the shelves.

Laptop Magazine reviews Sony Blu-Ray notebook and compares it with Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV650 that which HD-DVD enable, and concludes that if you’re chomping at the bit to start watching, editing, and burning HD video, the Sony VAIO VGN-AR190G delivers the goods. If your hedging between this Blu-Ray system and the HD-DVD-enabled Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV650, the Sony gets points for its lighter, sleeker design (8.4 pounds versus 10.1 pounds), better graphics scores, and, of course, the fact that the VAIO’s Blu-ray drive can write as well as read discs. However, these advantages don’t quite justify the $500 delta between the Toshiba and Sony.

Sony VAIO Type G Flash Drive Laptop

Japanese consumer electronics giant Sony has decided to start offering a laptop with a flash drive in place instead of a hard disk drive, based on the continue popularity and greater capacity of flash drives. Sony VAIO Type G was first launched last year and is notable because it’s the lightest 12.1-inch screen-class laptop on the market with weight of just 898 grams. Right now, Sony is refreshing its lightweight VAIO Type-G laptop and has begun offering a solid-state flash drive as an option. Besides, the new laptop is going to replace the 40 GB hard disk drive with 32 GB flash drive to further lighten this machine by 39 grams.

The 32 GB flash drive \makes the Sony VAIO Type G the first laptop from Sony to be available with using purely flash memory to store data, with weight at only 859 grams. However, flash drive is more expensive than the traditional hard disks. Customers will see the price of a Type G jump by ¥65,000 (US $545) when they choose a 32GB flash drive over a 40GB hard disk drive, said Shoko Yanagisawa, a Sony spokeswoman in Tokyo.

This Sony VAIO Type- G is based on an Intel Celeron M 443 (1.20GHz) processor with the flash drive option will cost about ¥229,800 (US $1950). Other than lighter notebook, flash drive version users will have additional few benefits of flash drives when compared over the hard disk drives, including faster data read and write times, greater shock resistance and lower power consumption (can get extra half-hour of battery life which allows usage up to 12.5 hours).

Unfortunately, Sony have no current plans to release the flash-drive Sony Vaio Type-G outside of Japan. This machine will be available exclusively through Sony’s build-to-order sales channel in Japan.
