Weekend IE news: new IE 7 logo and IE takes market share from Firefox

Big news this Saturday as Microsost unveils the new icon and branding for IE 7 …

Tony Chor from the IE team announced Internet Explorer 7's new logo and branding and I have to say, although it still looks similar to the old stuff, it's definitely been brought into the 21st century:

As you can see, the new “e” has more modern look, and the edges are a bit darker so the icon stands out better against different backgrounds. We liked the gold ring too since it brings in new energy and helps the icon pop a bit more than the old one.

Tony goes on to inform us that the new branding will begin appearing in "IE 7 for Windows XPSP2, Server 2003 SP1, and x64 versions" but will undergo a little bit of an update for Windows Vista.

Next up is a suprising report that Internet Explorer stole a bit of online browser-share back from Firefox last month.  If true, this would be the first month that Firefox didn't gain on IE since its 1.0 release back in November:

Firefox's share shrunk to 8.07 percent from 8.71 percent in June, while IE grew its market slice to 87.20 percent in July from 86.56 percent last month... Between January and June of this year, Firefox had posted monthly market share gains of between 0.5 percent and 1 percent at the expense of IE

The reason for this reversal isn't speculated on, but it could be anything from the fact that people are beginning to uptake SP2 quicker and finding the updates to IE6 are making it more secure, stable and feature rich (popup blocking for one).  Other reasons could include the increasing number of Firefox vulnerabilities that make it into the news.  It could also be simple statistical error, as there's no mention of HitsLink.com's error margin.  Are there other compelling reasons for IE bucking the trend?  Tell us in the comments.
